Laz Marquez has got some great some really cool redesigned movie posters on his site. This poster series for classic Hitchcock movies has caused a buzz, and I can totally see why.

Holy Shishkebab! So this is the designer behind some of the most arresting movie posters I have seen lately (some of them even posted on this blog - I'm Still Here and Social Network). Whatever the visual equivalent of a graphic designer's orgasm is, I bet his work comes pretty close. Wow.

The Unforgiving

There's an abandoned office block near my place and its been seriously torn apart over the last few months. This weekend I noticed the tag "seekrevenge.co.za" stenciled along the front. Obviously, I looked it up and it led me to a digital map of another abandoned building. It's all promo work for the upcoming local horror flick, The Unforgiving. Hmmmm...pretty intriguing. Look out for the stencils around Cape Town, if you can.

I'm Still Here

Whatever is going on with Joaquin Phoenix should no doubt make for a bit of interesting cinema with I'm Still Here - The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix - my money is on the "hoax" theory and this is just an attempt to mess with our little heads so these mainstream artists can be more "creative" . The trailer seems pretty weird, and the film's supposedly loaded with homo-erotic tension and anger. Plus, I am really intrigued by Casey Affleck's work behind the camera and the weird relationship Phoenix has with Diddy. Another star off the deep end (see Kanye West post).

Inception

Inception

OMG. I saw this last night and I am still shaken yet very inspired. Some of the most captivating ideas and visuals to hit the big screen in ages (and my oh my, what a brilliant score). Have to see it again. If you've seen it, here's a bit of extra reading. Christopher Nolan really just keeps getting better.

La Planete Sauvage

For some obscure reason, I have been delving into sci-fi, fantasy and post-apocalyptic films lately. I am even digging up The Abyss and District 9 again for some crazy cosmic fare. I am not sure why as I have a very low threshold when it comes to futuristic, Armageddon-type story lines. I get extremely paranoid. But I'm also a sucker for punishment, so I feel I must get my hands on cult classic La Planete Sauvage (Fantastic Planet). It has some really freaky Czech animation courtesy of the Jiri Trnka Studio ("Walt Disney of the East") which reminds me a lot of the Moomin series (which freaked the heck out of me as a kid). Also, the incredible Madlib aka Quasimoto uses a lot of the film's sound bites on his brilliant album The Unseen. I am really curious to see it, but I am getting goosebumps already.

Must-Sees

I am amped about these two films coming out later this year:

The Facebook story, The Social Network starring sweet Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake (please, let this not be the movie's "fail" moment).

Sophia Coppola's Somewhere - looking promising after the pretty but poor Marie Antoinette.

The sophisticated posters are great and the casting looks interesting. If I can manage to not give in to the hype surrounding them, I might actually have a cool viewing experience.

Got distracted by the deranged, genius schtick of Steve Martin as Dr Michael Hfuhruhurr and the sexy Kathleen Turner as Dolores last night in The Man With Two Brains. You have to see it - a really great laugh.
